Tesla Model 3 "Pencils Down" Officially Confirmed by Elon Musk

If there was anything you didn't like about the Model 3's looks but didn't say a word about it, your very minute chance of changing anything about it has flown away because Tesla's CEO has just announced that there will be no more work done on the vehicle's design.

That being said, we don't really know what the car looks like now after the men with the pencils had over three months at their disposal to fine-tune what will eventually become Tesla's first mass-market product. However, we've been warned as early as the March preview not to expect any significant changes, so we're not. On the other hand, close to three weeks ago Elon Musk came out and said that one of the biggest issues the public had with the initial design - the opening of its trunk - has been taken care of.

Judging by his statement at a recent event held inside the company's Gigafactory in Reno, Nevada, the mid-July deadline for "pencils down" has been respected, meaning that everything is going as planned for the Model 3. That is exactly what the 373,000+ people who have already placed an order for the $35,000 electric sedan would like to hear.

Unsurprisingly, Musk is even more confident than that. He says that Model 3 production is on track to meet the half million units by 2018 target, and it all has to do with the new manufacturing process. What's more, he says that once in full production, the new model should bring the company about $20 billion in revenues per year, with $5 billion in gross profit. That's consistent with the 500,000 units per year target sold for an average of $40,000.

The media event also meant that members of the press were able to get a closer look at the car everyone's talking about at the moment, including a beautiful red example with the turbine wheel design (courtesy of Electrek). It may be a bit hunchbacked, but it's the sexiest automotive hunchback we've ever seen.
