It’s been an exciting year for the automotive industry, with a great number of new cars being either revived or for the first time introduced to the market. And as 2019 is drawing to a close, it’s only natural for charts and lists to be drawn and put together, and winners to be declared.
As it has done for the past 30 years, the Car of the Year organization is putting the finishing touches on its own list of best cars of the year, with the goal of having the winning vehicle of 2019 revealed in the early months of 2020.
Working, as usual, with no categories, sub-divisions or classes, Car of the Year aims to reveal at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show in March the name of the car that impressed its 60 jurors, all automotive journalists, in more than one respect.
This week, Car of the Year announced the shortlist of seven cars that will fight for the title. Because there are no categories, the final seven represent a mix of body styles, powertrains and market segments from which only one will emerge victorious.
Of the decades-old nameplates, the BMW 1 Series, Peugeot 208 and Renault Clio have been nominated, as has been the Toyota Corolla. Ford enters the list with its brand new Puma, but the most interesting battle will take place between two EVs.
Tesla’s global hit Model 3 is in the final seven, and has been pitted against Porsche’s sensational Taycan. The two, already considered to become sales rivals as soon as the Taycan hits the market, will thus also be fighting for an honor that will likely bring them even more notoriety.
The decision on which car will win the title will be made in February, with each of the jurors asked to share their 25 voting points among five of the seven cars they consider to be the best.
