When Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval announced that Elon Musk’s incentive package is worth $1.2 billion, most of people in the auto industry felt a cold shiver. It means that Tesla will operate the Gigafactory tax-free for a whopping 10 years. This sure had the Paypal founder attract a lot of attention and investors for that matter. That seems to reflect in the way construction of the factory is moving forward too.
Like we previously reported, Tesla already spent more than $53.1 million on construction works at the Gigafactory site, east of Reno. Many have called Elon Musk a bit too big of a plans-maker in the past, but the South African-born genius has always proven them wrong. This is also why millions are constantly being spent for the huge project. After all, we are talking about the largest-to-be lithium-ion battery manufacturer of its kind in the world.
In case you were too busy watching the Lakers lately, we’ll remind you that Musk is counting for a 30% reduction in production cost of Tesla Motors car batteries with his huge plant.
By 2020, the Gigafactory is projected to achieve a production capacity that would employ approximately 6,500 people and supply 500,000 EVs per year. Panasonic is the main partner on this project as the famous company contributed to the plant’s development with $1 billion.
Why are we talking about all these numbers all of the sudden? Because we wanted to create the big picture first, before we’d talk about the photograph Musk’s younger brother, Kimbal posted on his Instagram the other day. The venture capitalist and environmentalist also sits on the board of Tesla Motors so it’s no wonder he has access to the model replica of the Gigafactory.
