Tesla German Gigafactory to Spill Half a Million New Cars per Year

Come 2020, the European continent will get its first-ever Gigafactory, the place where Tesla cars for this particular market will be born. Initially planned to be erected in the UK, the plant has been relocated to Germany due to the (probable) departure of the Island from the European Union.

New information about the facility uncovered by German publication Bild hints to the place being a mammoth undertaking. Some 10,000 new jobs will be created as a result of the facility being built on the outskirts of German capital Berlin, a good portion of them directly involved in making Tesla vehicles.

Bild says the German Gigafactory, which would cost Tesla roughly 4 billion euros ($4.4 billion), will eventually be capable of spilling out about half a million new cars per year. Plans are to start the build sometime in 2020, but no date for completion was announced.

Work at the facility will be backed by an R&D team that will be based in nearby Berlin.

The decision to move the factory of German soil was justified by Elon Musk, who said some of the best cars in the world come from Germany.

“Everyone knows that German engineering is outstanding, for sure, and that’s part of the reason why we are locating our Gigafactory Europe in Germany. We are also going to create an engineering and design centre in Berlin,” he said according to Bild back in November, when the news first broke.

The German site will be Tesla’s fourth Gigafactory, globally. The main hub is the one in Fremont, California, a former GM unit, but that’s not officially known as a Gigafactory. The term was first used for the plant in Reno, Nevada.

Gigafactory 2 is based in Buffalo, New York, and is tasked with making photovoltaic cells, while the third is currently under construction in Shanghai, China.
