From our previous coverage of the Tesla Model X e-crossover, you might remember that a production start date slated for Q3 of 2015 was thrown around by Elon Musk’s company. If all goes well, that date will be followed accordingly by the Palo Alto-based company, more so when you find out that Tesla Motors ordered Germany’s Durr AG to install 174 robots in its Fremont, Cali, assembly plant.
What you can see in the photo above is a Durr EcoBell3 atomizer, a robot that only knows how to masterfully spray paint. According to Durr AG, no less than 100 paint robots are to be installed in Tesla’s Fremont factory, but there are a few differences between Durr’s robots that're necessary to detail.

The Stuttgart-based global supplier of systems and services mainly intended for automobile manufacturing was ordered by Tesla to source the following types of robots: EcoBell3 Ci (specialized in spraying waterborne paint on the cabin’s plastics), EcoBell3 E (specialized in pairing the body), EcoBell3 with direct charge (for solvent-based automotive paints) and EcoLCC2 (a version specialized in fine-tuning the colors).

Though the Musk man and Tesla Motors are keeping quiet about this massive hi-tech robot order, we can also tell you the following: on top of those 100 paint robots, Durr AG will source 48 handling robots and 26 sealing robots. The 174 robots are to be installed at Fremont in three phases. According to Durr, the robotic workforce will grant the Fremont complex with the capacity of painting around 500,000 cars per year.

We hear: the updated paint shop will be ready late this summer.
