Tesla Dumps the UK, to Open Gigafactory in Germany

Europeans are a car-making breed, and have been so since more than a century ago. Of all the European nations, the Germans, French and Brits are the most productive in this industry. Of these three still, there is no European state prouder of its auto industry more than the UK.
The British nation has on its soil perhaps the most diverse flock of car making companies, from domestic to foreign, from ultra-luxury to entry level, and so on. What the country lacks, at least for now, is a fully-fledged EV maker.

The UK was about to get what it’s missing soon. Presently, facing the onslaught of newcomers Porsche, Volkswagen or Polestar, Tesla is moving forward with older plans of setting up a Gigafactory on the Old Continent as well.

Until recently, the place most often cited as the possible location of the plant was the United Kingdom. But the looming departure of the country from the European Union turned things around: the Tesla Gigafactory will be in Germany.

On Tuesday, November 12, Elon Musk tweeted “GIGA BERLIN” and added that his company will be assembling there “batteries, powertrains & vehicles,” starting with the Model Y.

“Some of the best cars in the world are made in Germany,” the American executive was quoted as saying by Bild.

“Everyone knows that German engineering is outstanding, for sure, and that’s part of the reason why we are locating our Gigafactory Europe in Germany. We are also going to create an engineering and design centre in Berlin.”

Apparently, the decision to shift from the UK to Germany was caused by the potential risks posed by the looming – yet uncertain – Brexit.

Aside for the build of the Gigafactory, Tesla also plans to create an R&D team in Berlin, one that initially was scheduled to operate from the UK as well.
