"The fundamental thing with 'Top Gear' is that the show was about as authentic as a Milli Vanilli concert, but the problem is most viewers don't know that," Musk told the Detroit News this week. "For European investors, every single one, except one, specifically asked us why our car broke down on 'Top Gear. It was (messed) up."
According the Tesla Motors CEO, Top Gear didn’t give the Roadster a fair chance to show what it’s got. "They literally wrote the script at 'Top Gear' before we even gave them the cars," he said, adding that Tesla employees found the script even before the test had started. "The script shows our car breaking down, but we only just gave you the car? It was just completely phony."
Andy Wilman, the show’s executive producer, rejected several claims from the carmaker in a recent blog post, including the suggestion that the show had "condemned the car in advance." He wrote that “Top Gear had already driven the car prior to filming, to enable us to form a view on it in advance."
According to the executive producer, the popular car show works off a “rough draft of a script so that the director and film crew can get to work right away, knowing what shots they will need to capture," but this is changed depending on how the car performs on the day of filming.
