Sad news from New Delhi, India where a teenager was accidentally killed in a police action against illegat street stunting.
Due to the risks stunting on public roads bring into the lives of the local the communities, the New Delhi police started a massive action to limit, if not put an end to this. Unfortunately things turned from bad to worse past Sunday in the early hours.
The LEOs tried to stop Puneet Sharma, but he ran away. As police gave chase and Puneet seemed to be getting away on his modified Bajaj Pulsar bike, one of the officers aimed to shoot Puneet's rear tire to puncture it and thus bring the bike to a stop.
Missing the rear tire, the bullet hit Karan Pandey, one of Puneet's friends who was riding as his pillion. Karan, 19, succumbed to his bullet wound. The circumstances of the whole affair are yet not clear, and an investigation was initiated.
Karan's mother is now asking for justice, as it's the Police who has a lot of explaining to do. Shooting at bikers is probably one of the last things to do, and even so, only under extremely dangerous conditions, which we doubt was the case here.
Pursuing him until running out of gas or searching for him according to the license plates would have been much more sensible actions. Sadly, there's no turning back now, as Karan is dead and even prosecuting the cop would be only a small comfort for his family.
We here obviously do not support street stunting, but shooting riders is not the solution.
