Ever wondered which age group of drivers is most likely to be involved in a car crash? Yup, most of you guessed it - teenagers aged 17 to 19 make up one in eight automobile accidents that involve injury.
The U.K.-based Royal Automobile Club and Transport Research Laboratory surveyed a great number of motorists throughout Great Britain for over five years and confronted findings with government statistics on this matter. Needless to say, results mostly reflect our preconceived ideas regarding drivers in their prime.
A whopping 11.9 percent of British road accidents involving injury or fatality include drivers that barely got their license. The more worrying fact is that these 17 to 19-year-old teens make up a mere 1.5 percent of licensed drivers in the United Kingdom.
While Great London represents the lowest proportion of crashes involving the aforementioned age group of drivers (5.6 percent), the most dangerous parts of Great Britain for teen motorists are Gwent, Wales (17 percent), Cumbria and North Wales (15.8 percent), as well as the Grampian regions in Scotland (15.7 percent).
The worrying findings persuaded the RAC and TRL to come up with a few propositions to make the Graduated Driving License (GDL) a little bit more restrictive for young motorists. If these are to be adopted, an estimated 4,500 fewer people would be hurt on an average 12-month period, including 430 seriously or fatally injured.
