Teen Drivers “Put Everyone at Risk” According to the AAA

The American Automobile Association Foundation recently published a study titled “teen drivers put everyone at risk.” Considering that motor-vehicle crashes are the foremost cause of death for American citizens between 11 and 29 years, this claim might hold water, but let us dig deeper and find out more.

According to the AAA, the study used data from police-reported crashes of drivers aged 15 to 19, from 1994 to 2013. The findings are rather worrisome to say the least. We’re informed that the overall number of teen crashes are down, but “the majority of people killed (66%) and injured (67%) in crashes involving a teen driver are people other than the teen themselves.”

After thorough analysis of the given crash data, the AAA claims that roughly 50 percent of the injured people were in another vehicle, 17 percent were in teen drivers’ cars and 2 percent were pedestrians, bicyclists and whatnots. And now for the death-related side of this story: nearly 30 percent of those killed in crashes were in another vehicle.

In addition to the previously mentioned, 27 percent of the dead were passengers in teen drivers’ cars and some 10 percent were non-motorists. The AAA is adamant that it’s promoting the adjacent study findings to raise the attention among parents of teen drivers and all motorists particularly during the “100 Deadliest Days” period.

Summer is a deadly timeframe according to police-reported crash intel because an average of 220 teen drivers and passengers died in traffic crashes during each of the summer months. AAA people say that it’s a 43 percent increase compared to the rest of the year.

“Everyone has an incentive to keep teen drivers safe during the summer—and all year long—because it makes roads safer for everyone,” declared Jennifer Ryan, AAA Director of State Relations. “Insightful data from this research help to inform parents and policymakers who can push legislation that results in an impactful difference.” For the full study, please refer to the PDF file attached below.
