The incident happened after a smoking session with his friends, 7 News reports. On his way home, 19-year-old Benjamin Saurini saw the police lights and panicked. He knew his car smelled of marijuana and he knew he would get busted for a DUI when he didn’t even have a valid driver’s license, so he tried to speed away.

In his rush, he side-swiped the patrol car, pinning a “senior officer” against the vehicle and breaking his leg. Benjamin continued on his way and went home, to sleep it off.

The next day, he woke to the news of the assault on the police officer and he realized he was in major trouble. First, he tried to remove evidence of his involvement, trying to get rid of the car and the plates. Then, as his conscience wouldn’t stop nagging him, he informed his parents of what he’d done and turned himself in.

According to the media outlet, despite facing 14 charges initially, Benjamin got off easily. He’s been granted bail and the conditions of his release include keeping an early curfew, not driving and not doing drugs anymore, drug counseling and a liaise with a parole officer. He is back in court in September, when the judge will check on his progress.

“The court was told on Tuesday the teenager was suitable for a program where he would be supervised at least once a week and undergo drug education and treatment, particularly for the drug ice,” the report notes.

Initially, Benjamin was facing charges like assault on a police officer, unlicensed driving, crashing into an emergency vehicle and conduct endangering life. During the bail hearing, his father revealed Benjamin started using drugs about 3 years prior, but they (the parents) had only become aware of how severe it was 8 months before.
