Technology XXX: Future BMW Motorcycles Will Have Laser Headlights

BMW will be the first automotive manufacturer in the world to equip full-laser headlights on its vehicles. The new technology will first be introduced on the company's i8 plug-in cars, but official sources also report that motorcycles will also be sharing it shortly.

First introduced in 2011 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, the laser headlight technology is said to be the next best thing in vehicle illumination.

Range, power and size/weight are the three areas the new BMW laser headlights are dominating. The new laser units are said to provide double the illumination range of the actual LED headlights of the i8, and this means they'll be good for about 2,000 feet (609m).

The power consumption is said to be 30% lower, also compared to the present i8 LED headlights, while the size and weight are also diminished, being 10 times lighter than the aforementioned devices.

BMW says that the light produced by the new units resembles daylight quite a lot, thus being perceived by humans as pleasant.

This light produced by directing the laser beam onto a small surface covered in a fluorescent phosphorus substance and whose luminescence is "ten times more intensive than conventional light sources".

"Due to their highly intensive and virtually ideal beam properties, laser diodes render the overall system even more efficient. In conjunction with a camera-aided digital high-beam assistant, blinding of oncoming traffic or vehicles ahead is reliably eliminated.

BMW Laser Light is the ideal light source for the main beam of a vehicle. It combines unparalleled performance and safety with a high level of efficiency and exceptional compactness. Its outstanding range facilitates improved illumination and even better visibility when driving in the dark. As a result, it ensures a more relaxed and comfortable driving experience and enhanced road safety.
All important factors that will fit perfectly on future BMW motorcycles," the sources add.
