Following the investigation conducted by the Indian manufacturer into the matter, some decisions have been made to at least try and prevent any more internal combustion episodes involving the Nanos.
Now, nobody from Tata actually confirmed that the fires were a design fault or such. What Tata is saying is that the cars are as safe as they come. Nevertheless, some extra precautionary measures will be taken.
"The Nano car is a very reliable and safe vehicle,” Carl-Peter Forster, Tata's CEO was quoted as saying by wheelsunplugged.com. “The company has undertaken a second check and found that the vehicle has a safe design.”
“The company has taken up several corrective measures and will now offer cover tool on catalytic converter to prevent the car from catching fire. It will also install fuse in electrical components to avoid short circuits."
The changes will not be limited to the cars currently being produced, but will also be offered to the existing customers. Tata will call and ask all Nano owners if they would like their vehicle to be upgraded. The carmaker is not calling this action a recall.
Unclear whether the fires are to blame or not (truth be told, there haven't been as many incidents to justify an India-wide panic), the sales figures for the past few months seem to have dropped a notch or two.
