Tata Motors will begin sales of the Nano in Indonesia early next year, according to local reports. The least expensive car in the world will be exported from India as a completely built unit. The decision to assemble Nanos locally in Indonesia will be made only based on demand.
The Nano will be sold in left-hand drive with a petrol engine, a two-cylinder 623cc unit with 38 hp. This will be mate to a six-speed manual gearbox.
Biswadev Sengupta, CEO of Tata Motors for Indonesian Operations, announced that Tata will also import commercial vehicles from early 2013.
“The multipurpose vehicle [MPV] segment is the largest in the passenger vehicle market. However, the hatchback segment, although still very small, is growing fast and that is where we want to place our product,” he said.
Initially, Tata motors will have a network of about 12 to 15 dealerships, focused mainly in and around Jakarta and Java.
