Let’s take a little break from all the DRLs, touch screens, side cameras and laser guns from today’s vehicles and take a look at something older but wonderful.
Like the first generation Toyota Prius, which started the hybrid trend back in 1997 when it went on sale and nobody gave it any chance. It was unstylish, plasticky and had a spicy price tag due to its over-engineered hybrid powertrain.
But it succeeded due to its efficiency. Nobody bought it for its appearance, or to pickup chicks, but for its 50 mpg combined fuel consumption. And most interesting is the fact that it had success in the US, where they had no issue whatsoever with fuel price or emissions regulations back in the day. The car was not officially sold in the region, but greenheads started importing it by themselves.
AutoGuide took some time off from today’s intricate machines and “re-reviewed” the 1997 Prius. Read the full story here.
