Only 5 days are left until Christmas, but some automakers have little to celebrate due to their ongoing fight against defective or sub-standard supplier-sourced parts. This time around, FCA US LLC announced that it's expanding a recall of vehicles equipped with Takata Corp. airbags inflators.
Approximately 287,945 units of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 light-duty pickup truck are called back on a global scale to install a retainer that prevents an axle fastener from loosening, but these full-size workhorses are also covered by this latest expansion of the notorious Takata Corporation recall campaign.
Besides the 1500, FCA US LLC highlights that vehicles equipped with faulty airbags include a number of 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks, as well as the Dodge Ram 3500 chassis cab, with the addition of the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen full-size SUVs, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum, Dodge Dakota and even the Mitsubishi Raider small pickup truck.
Although internal tests saw inflators deploy as intended and Neither FCA US nor Takata have identified a defect in this population of inflators, this expansion of an ongoing field action hiked the tally of affected US vehicles to a whopping 3.3 million. FCA US LLC highlights that it continues to study the suspect airbags, which aren't used in the company’s current production vehicles.
As a brief reminder, these 2004 to 2007 model year vehicles are confined to hot and humid places like Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, with 2,890,789 units across the United States, 258k in Canada, 66,436 in Mexico and some 99,030 outside the NAFTA region. With the present global field action,the Chrysler Group FCA US LLC estimates that roughly 3,672,770 cars need airbag inflator replacements.
