Swine Flu to Endanger Spanish Grand Prix

The Spanish Grand Prix might be endangered by the deadly swine flue that seems to have spread worldwide. As reported by several media channels in Spain, the flue seems to have made several victims within the Catalunya region where the upcoming grand prix is scheduled to take place starting May 8.

The flue was initially reported only in Mexico, where more than 150 people died after catching the aforementioned virus. Although the Mexican government reacted immediately to keep the flue from spreading – closing the schools, all public events and even limiting air traffic – it seems other parts of the world have been affected.

As reported by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Catalunya has so far registered the highest number of flue cases in the entire European continent. Although no official numbers have been disclosed, WHO has raised the alert level to 4 on Monday.

Travel restrictions might also be enforced by world governments in the near future, as this is believed to be an easy way to spread the virus worldwide. Therefore, almost all roads to or from the Spanish region might be closed, including the ones of Formula 1.

In the meantime, WHO assistant director General Keiji Fukuda urged everybody to stay calm, ditching the rumors about a potential travel restriction for Catalunya. Although it would not be in their power to stop such a measure, WHO insisted there are a number of ways the virus can be spread, and traveling is the most insignificant of those.

With the virus being widespread, closing borders or restricting travel really has very little effect in stopping the movement of this virus,” argued Fukuda.
