Suzuki’s UK division has decided to extend the Datatag MASTER security scheme for used models, visordown reports. So far the Datatag program was limited to new motorcycles sold by Suzuki, BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, Triumph, and Yamaha, with Ducati also joining the program more than a year ago. Suzuki’s move will probably be followed by the rest of the manufacturers which are currently using Datatag, as recent studies revealed that the system really works.
Datatag is a security program for motorcycles, involving registering vehicle information in the Motorcycle and Scooter Tagged Equipment Register (MASTER) database. The information is linked to a code which is then imprinted using stealth etching on the bike’s components, backed my microscopic dots, RFID transponders and visible, tamper-proof stickers. This makes a stolen bike traceable even after it has been dismantled, helping the cops track back to those who tore it apart.
The visible warnings about a vehicle being registered in the Datatag system seems to have been a good deterrent, with only 403 motorcycles stolen out of a massive 52,000+ units. 37 percent of these bikes have also been traced and recovered, as well, adding to the success rate of the Datatag. And with the MASTER database easily accessible in real time 24/7, the system is also much faster to use than relying on complex and slow police DV inquiries.
Registering with MASTER and Datatag is now available for older bikes, with a €115 ($155) fee. But Suzuki UK decided to up the ante and offer the service with a subsidized cost of £55 (€70 or $93).
