Suzuki has been making a sedan version of its popular Swift since 2005, in India (and a few other developing markets). This February, they launched a sedan version of the latest incarnation of the car, called the ‘Swift DZire’. Now, the Japanese manufacturer has applied for a patent in China, where it plans to sell the car as well.
Currently, the hatchback version of the China-bound Swift is built by the Chang’an Suzuki joint venture and is available with either a 1.3-liter engine, or a larger 1.5-liter unit - also petrol powered. The Indian version of the car is also available with a Fiat-sourced 1.3-liter diesel, which may make its way into the Chinese variant as well - it would make the Swift a virtually unbeatable proposition in terms of both economy and driving fun, as well as practicality and would be a big hit in diesel guise, we say.
Judging by how long these things usually take, and factoring in the fact that the car has already been made, it’s all a case of how quickly they can undertake the necessary retooling, in preparation for production - we say there’s even a chance it may debut by the end of this year.
