We already know that Fiat makes some excellent diesel engines (being one of the pioneers of the diesel engined passenger car) and we also know about their continued collaboration with Suzuki. Their 1.3-liter Multijet diesel now powers the new Suzuki Swift, with great results.
Recently, a Swift DDiS was driven from Auckland to Wellington, on an ‘economy marathon’, and then driven back to Auckland, on a single tank of diesel. Despite stopping 60km (38miles) short of Auckland on the return trip, the 42 liters of diesel gave it a complete range of 1,240 km (764 miles), and after some basic maths we get its good (though not good enough, really) 3.36 l/100km (83.4 mpg), slightly better than the 3.6 l/100km (78.5 mpg) claimed by the manufacturer.
As fuel efficiency is becoming ever-more important in the mind of the car buyer, manufacturers are adopting this into their marketing more and more. Judging by this fact, we expect the Suzuki Swift DDiS to sell well, in New Zealand.
