Suzuki Shows Turbo Engine in Tokyo, Should We Prepare for a New Era?

Suzuki made a bold move at the Tokyo Motor Show, the home show for the Japanese houses, and revealed a turbocharged engine, but without offering clear explanations as to where they will be using it.

So the info is a bit scarce, leaving a lot to be guessed. Still, it looks like this might be the actual power plant of the Suzuki Recursion, a turbocharged concept that was introduced back in 2013. The Recursion was a machine about which Suzuki only said it was motivated by a turbo-fed parallel twin engine with a displacement of around 600cc.

Since the naming conventions of the bikes and engines often stray from the actual displacement figures, the 588cc of this new Suzuki engine could easily be fit in the 600cc/Supersport category.

100hp and 100 Nm with better fuel economy sounds delicious

Reportedly, the engine codename is EX7 and is expected to produce 100 horsepower at a very useable 8,000 rpm. The fun factor, however, is introduced by the 74 lb-ft (100.4 Nm) peak torque the engine is said to produce at only 4,500 revs per minute.

Such an engine could represent a very smart move from Suzuki, as it promises better fuel economy while producing Supersport-class power figures, and potential customers might find this very appealing.

However, the biggest thing that needs to be sorted out is in what motorcycle the new Suzuki will go. If Hamamatsu puts this power plant into a steel chassis, it might nullify whatever advantage the bike could have had, as the extra weight will compensate the advantages of turbocharging in a negative way.

But if Suzuki understands that the new generation of bikes has to be agile and lightweight, we might just get to see a new kid on the block. If Suzuki's turbo bike tips the scales at around 200 kg (441 lb), it will lose much of its appeal. On the other hand, using an advanced aluminium frame and swingarm design could drop the numbers in the 150-160 kg (330-350 lb) zone, and the 100 horsies and 100 Nm could make this bike extremely fun, adding the turbo whine to the whole game.

Cometh turbo age anew!
