Suzuki Planning a Revamp of the Katana Family?

How new will the new Suzuki Katana actually be? 1 photo

We might just be in for some cool new bikes from the house of Hamamatsu, as Suzuki applied for a new trademark for not one, but two names, one of which is definitely a landmark in the modern times. Suzuki may be planning a revival of the Katana and Gamma machines, and some even speculate that their turbo concept Recursion might find a place in one of these two new line-ups.
Recently, rumors have surfaced mentioning that the Recursion might actually become a production model in the near future, so the excitement which comes with these new trademark applications is easy to understand. Even more, a lot of people say that it’s about time Suzuki actually came up with really new bikes…

Katana and Gamma

While the Katana name still has a strong presence on the street, with plenty of GSX-F bikes rolling on the roads of Europe, only the older chaps will remember the Gamma. Gamma was a suffix for the 2-stroke 500cc bike Marco Lucchinelli and Franco Uncini gloriously rode to world fame winning the riders titles in 1981 and 1982, respectively. The Gamma is the successor of the RG500 and was replaced by the RGV500.

Now, it’s hard to believe that Suzuki is planning to revive two-strokers, but there is nothing stopping Hamamatsu to transform the Recursion project into an all-new turbocharged production model named Gamma, is it? Or a new Katana, for what’s worth…

Suzuki fans beg for massive upgrades

Truth be told, Suzuki was not exactly the most dynamic maker during the last years. Of course, the recent bankruptcy story and the re-organization of the North American branch left the house of Hamamatsu with a lot of stringent problems which had to be dealt with, and it’s fairly easy to understand that developing a massive set of upgrades for the bike line-up was not on the priority list.

Still, the competition was not idle all this time, and even worked around the clock to provide customers with alternatives. Suzuki is also lagging behind the competition in the small-displacement segment, where the potential has surprisingly proved to be huge in the last years.

Are we in for a major overhaul of all Suzuki models? We doubt that changes at such a scale are possible, but if the new Katana and Gamma machines will be new AND cool, we might see a brighter sun shining over Hamamatsu.
