Suzuki EXTRIGGER Is the Electric Response to the Honda Grom

Back in late 2013, Suzuki unveiled what appeared to be a working prototype of an electric monkey bike. They used to call it EXTRIGGER, and it was significantly different from what Hamamatsu engineers and designers had accustomed us to over the years. Well, it looks like the electric monkey will finally arrive as a product as Suzuki filed a patent for it.

It is yet uncertain whether Suzuki will retain the EXTRIGGER name or will make use of a slightly more commercial one, but what's clear is that the patent sketches show an electric bike that is exceptionally similar to the photos we showed you two and a half years ago.

This not only includes the overall looks but also the design of the swingarm, frame elements or headlight. We might believe that the machine Suzuki revealed in 2013 was pretty close to the production stage, at least as far as the chassis and bodywork were concerned.

Also, in the absence of a real Suzuki monkey bike, we might think that Hamamatsu plans an electric rival to the almighty Honda Grom that was so warmly welcomed by the markets, with the Kawasaki Z120 Pro being perhaps next on the "To deal with" list.

Judging by the looks of the bike, Suzuki could cram a lot of batteries inside the frame of the EXTRIGGER if they wanted, even though such motorbikes are engineered with the urban environment in mind. Light and recharging quickly, bikes like the Suzuki EXTRIGGER might be a very appealing alternative to the petrol-powered ones.

At the same time, such a bike could be a neat way to introduce youngsters to motorcycling and road racing, especially as electric bikes come with stronger acceleration and torque right off idle, and the lack of a gearbox makes them less difficult to operate.

Something tells us that we will see the Suzuki EXTRIGGER making its debut this fall, at Intermot or EICMA.
