Sutil Handed $20,000 Fine for Crashing into Heidfeld

Only an unfortunate incident like the one that happened yesterday night, during the Singapore Grand Prix, could have ended Nick Heidfeld incredible classified finishes streak in the Formula One Championship. The German driver was aiming for his 43rd at the Marina Bay Circuit, but it was his very countryman Adrian Sutil that had other plans.

While trying to rejoin the track after a spin, Sutil drove his Force India right into Nick Heidfeld's car. The German insisted, after the race, that he didn't see the BMW Sauber driver when trying to come back to the track, but was instead handed a $20,000 fine by the race stewards for his wrongdoing.

I didn't see him coming as I was on the move already and couldn't react to it, but I'm sorry for it. It was a race incident,” said Sutil after the race.

Heidfeld, on the other hand, was incredibly frustrated with the fact that he had to end the day before the chequered flag, as he nervously called Sutil's move a “stupid” one. In addition, when asked by the reporters – shortly after rejoining his team's garage – what should Sutil's punishment be, “suggested that the governing body should supply Sutil with a brain,” noted the GMM news agency.

It was clearly Adrian Sutil's fault. He had spun backwards and then just drove back onto the track and straight into my car. That's something you just can't do,” sounded the official statement of Nick Heidfeld some hours later, via the BMW Sauber's press centre.

Heidfeld is currently 13th overall in the drivers' classification, following his back-to-back point finishes at Spa and Monza.
