Superstorm Sandy Makes 16 Fisker Karma EVs Catch Fire in New Jersey Port

The streak of sheer bad luck does not seem to end for Fisker, as Superstrom Sandy has just drowned a reported 16 examples of their Karma, which then reportedly caught fire, according to the temporary site Jalopnik is running from. Apparently, the range-extended EVs were “first submerged in a strom surge and then caught fire, exploded.”

It is still a mystery why these luxurious EV barges are so prone to catching fire, as they are built with the best materials, in a highly-advanced car plant, in Finland, and the Finns don`t mess around with safety. Perhaps it’s the battery pack which shorted when it came in contact with the water, though they are usually designed to withstand flooding, as well as fires, as is the battery pack of the Nissan Leaf, which proved itself safe in a massive fire.

If the number 16 proves accurate, then the total damages will amount to at least $1.6-million. Also, 16 prospective Karma owners will have to wait for another car to get built for them, a long and painstaking process, as the car is not really ‘mass produced’.

Following the incident, Fisker had this to say:

It was reported today that several Fisker Karmas were damaged by fire at the Port of Newark after being submerged in sea water during Superstorm Sandy. We can report that there were no injuries and none of the cars were being charged at the time.

We have confidence in the Fisker Karma and safety is our primary concern. While we intend to find the cause as quickly as possible, storm damage has restricted access to the port.

We will issue a further statement once the root cause has been determined.
