Wonder what's the best ever sports coupe of all time? The Petersen Automotive Museum Foundation will host an exhibition on April 10 in sunny Los Angeles in order to find an answer to this question. Organisers have invited world-renown rock stars, film directors, actors and race car drivers to help them choose the best two-seat fixed-head car ever made.
The list of celebrity curators includes:

  • Patrick Dempsey (actor and racer);
  • James Hetfield (Metallica frontman);
  • Adam Carolla (comedian and TV personality);
  • Nick Mason (Pink Floyd drummer);
  • Brian Johnson (AC/DC vocalist);
  • Francis Ford Coppola (film director);
  • Angus MacKenzie (Motor Trend editor);
  • Bobby Rahal (American race car driver);
  • John Lasseter (two-time Oscar winner);
  • Bruce Meyer (car collector);
  • Ian Callum (Jaguar's Director of Design);
  • Tanner Foust, Adam Ferrara, Rutledge Wood (Top Gear USA hosts).

Thumbs up to the Petersen for choosing such a diverse mix of guest curators. Although the organisers have yet to announce the actual vehicles going on display, the lineup will feature 4-wheeled beauties from Italy, Japan, Great Britain, Germany and the United States. The list of chosen sports coupes will be revealed on April 9, at the gallery's opening event for the media. Cars aside, the exhibit will also feature photography by Scott Williamson, which will highlight important sports coupes that were not included by any of the celebrity curators but deserve recognition. The exhibit will also include short videos featuring each curator and their choice of vehicle.

Petersen Executive Director, Terry Karges, stated: “Our goal is to present an exciting exhibit unlike anything ever done in an automotive museum, and it was a natural fit to work with Jaguar after our successful collaboration at the Los Angeles Auto Show featuring the Steve McQueen XKSS and the new Jaguar F-TYPE. The finest sports coupes on earth may have been built in Maranello, Coventry and Stuttgart, but they were purchased and driven here. This is an exhibit we expect to resonate with the people of Los Angeles and of the world.”

“Every automotive enthusiast has their list of all-time favorite cars, and for many that list is dominated by high performance sports coupes like the Jaguar E-TYPE,” said Jeff Curry, Brand Vice President, Jaguar. “To mark the arrival of the all-new F-TYPE Coupe, we are very pleased to help the Petersen present this expertly curated collection of coupes answering the question, ‘what is the greatest sports coupe of all time?’ and we hope to challenge every enthusiast to answer the question themselves.”

From the teaser video you can check out below, we identified a few of the twelve cars that surely make part of that list. In order of appearance, the video features iconic cars such as the Ford GT40, Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray, a 250 series Ferrari, Porsche's original 911 and the first series 1961 Jaguar E-Type. Which of these cars do you think will make the top of the list? Our money's on the E-Type.
