There are two types of electric vehicles now; those build for road use and those for breaking records. The differences between the two are huge, and while the passenger ones are build for comfort and regular car convenience, the latter are ditching everything in favor of range and speed.
That was until now, as Sunswift, a team of engineering students from the University of New South Wales, are trying to combine the two types into something that will change the way we travel.

Their latest creation is eVe, a lightweight electric vehicle built after their first one holding the Guinness World Record for speed, scoring 88 km/h (55 mph) in 2011.

With the new EV, the team hopes to break the record for the highest average speed over a 500 km (310 miles) distance, which is set at 73 km/h (45 mph) and hasn’t been busted since 20 years ago.

How will the eVe go for 500 km and maintain a high speed? Well, first of all, it’s made out of carbon fiber, it weighs 300 kg (661 lb) and it’s powered by two custom electric motors boasting an incredible 97 percent efficiency.

Power is supplied by a bank of Li-ion laptop computer batteries which in turn are backed up by solar panels mounted all over the top of the car. Using both power sources, eVe can go for 800 km (500 miles), while ditching the solar cells will leave it with a range of 500 km (310), just enough to drive for the new record.

So, what’s that special with this car after all, besides the huge range compared to road use EVs? Well, if you look careful, it is not like all those single seater tricycles with a teardrop body over them.

The eVe resembles a normal car, it has two seats , two doors and is almost road legal. You won’t get heated seats, air conditioning and an infotainment system, but it’s one step closer to revolutionizing electric vehicles. We just have to wait for those ultra efficient batteries to get mass produced.
