SUNRED Sign Tom Boardman for 2009

SUNRED Engineering have completed their driver lineup for the upcoming FIA WTCC season, adding Tom Boardman to their team's roster. The 25-year old British driver – born in Forton, Lancashire – will therefore join Tom Coronel in driving the two Seat Leons for 2009 at his very debut in the series.

“It all feels like a bit of a dream at the moment - I feel like the luckiest man alive. Racing in the WTCC has been my aim for some time now, and I feel my time has come to show everyone what I'm capable of. I've watched the WTCC on television for several years and always dreamt of competing in it. Now I have this great opportunity, I'm going to give it one hundred percent,” said Boardman after being confirmed by SUNRED for 2009.

The Brit became the youngest driver to ever debut in the British Touring Car Championship in 2001, after joining the Production Class. His best performance in the aforementioned series was a 4th place overall in 2003, despite being the winningest driver that year.

He then switched to the Seat Cupra challenger where he scored a 3rd place overall in 2004. Later on, he would go on to win the SEAT Leon Supercopa title in Spain, in 2008. His first meeting with the FIA WTCC series happened last year, at Estoril, driving for SUNRED team. He competed on a Seat León 2.0 TFSI and scored a 17th place in Race 2. Nevertheless, he has already set some high goals for 2009, his first full-time campaign in the new series.

“Tom Coronel did really well in the SUNRED Leon last year, and even won the second WTCC race in Japan outright. I think together we'll make a very strong team and be able to challenge for the Independents' titles in both the teams' and drivers' categories,” concluded Boardman.
