Suge Knight, the former Death Row Records executive who’s been in prison since January 2015 when he was arrested for backing his truck over 2 men, has been sentenced to 28 years behind bars.
The incident happened in Compton, on the set of the Dr. Dre-produced movie “Straight Outta Compton,” where Knight came to fight over what he believed was an unfair portrayal of his actions in the film. The film tells the story of the group N.W.A., founded by Dr. Dre, Easy E and Ice Cube, and Knight wanted some details clarified about how he’d be portrayed in it.
He ended up backing his truck and hitting one man Cle “Bone” Sloan, then rolling over another, Terry Carter – both in reverse and forward. The hit and run occurred after a violent verbal spat, so all signs pointed to a voluntary act on behalf of the rapper and music executive.
Because of the severity of his crime, which was captured on CCTV cameras, Knight was refused bail. He also had a prior record of violent offenses and this was his third strike. His jury trial was supposed to start on October 1, and he was facing life in jail without the possibility of parole if he was found guilty.
People Magazine reports that his attorney reached out to prosecutors and struck a plea deal. Knight pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter. Under the plea deal, he was sentenced to 22 years in state prison on the manslaughter charge, 5 years for this being his third strike and 1 year for assault with a deadly weapon – his truck, in this case.
However, Knight also gets credit for time served. So, adding the issue of overcrowding and the time he’s already spent behind bars, he’s looking at a release after about 10 years or so. It’s considerably less than his sentence, but Knight also has serious health issues, so it will still feel like forever to him.
