The big news: three new models are coming until 2013, plus a new hybrid. It’s not very clear at the moment whether the hybrid is coming before 2013, but given the trend for eco-friendly cars at the moment, we are inclined to belie it is.
It’s all speculation at the moment, but the petrol-electric could be based on the 2009 Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept that was unveiled in Tokyo two years ago. The vehicle made use of a 2.0-liter horizontally opposed gasoline four-cylinder engine with direct injection and turbocharging technologies, as well as a CVT. The hybrid of its name came in the form of twin electric motors - one on the front axle and one at the rear.
As part of its mid-term goals, Subaru hopes to boost global sales by 37 percent by 2016. During that same period, Subaru looks to triple sales in China to 180,000 units.
Other aspects of the plan include cost-cutting measures, a significant fuel economy improvement across the range, as well as the goal of being a leader in “safety performance.” No details have been provided on how the Japanese carmaker will cut costs, but it plans to do so by 20 percent. It’s likely that this will come out of other collaborations with Toyota, as the automotive pair have collaborated on the FT-86 sports car project and are rumored to develop a crossover chassis as well.
