Subaru Sports Car Rendering Looks Like Modern 22B STI, Needs to Happen
The success of the Toyota Supra proved to other Japanese automakers that you really can exploit that juicy heritage and sell a $60,000 sports car even if it's got the wrong engine and gearbox. Everybody is talking about the Honda S2000 and the Mazda RX-8 right now, but we want a Subaru.
Subaru - don't they make that brash overpriced compact sedan? Yes, they do. But while the WRX and STI are the only hot Fuji-made models right now, their history is littered with other interesting machines worth resurrecting.

There's the SVX from the early 1990s or the super-boxy XT Turbo from the 80s. But our favorite 2-door Subarus are more along the lines of the limited-edition 22B STI with the 276 horsepower engine and the widebody kit.

This rendering by chopping_pixels feels like a modern version of that car. It's got the right color, and if Subaru could offer that wing, those wheels and a giant hood scoop, that would be great. We might not pay $60,000, but if it's got AWD and about 340 horsepower, the Supra would be in trouble.

There's at least one guy working at Subaru going "see, I told you so" right now. That's because they've shown multiple concepts with the coupe format and the next-gen WRX/STI were supposed to get an independent body from the regular Impreza.

But as things stand, that kind of car would have some serious overlap with the BRZ's replacement. It's understood that the new Toyobaru project will feature Toyota's TNGA platform and a 2.4-liter boxer with a single turbocharger and about 260 horsepower.

So what does our rendering have that the BRZ wouldn't? For starters, the symmetrical permanent AWD that's useful when you install forged internals and intercooler and ask the engine to deliver double the power. Also, we want a big Subaru, not some tiny coupe that can't store its own set of spare drift tires.
