Subaru Says there Will Be a Next BRZ Model

About two weeks ago, Toyota chief engineer Tetsuya Tada said the company might turn to BMW to further develop its GT 86, thus abandoning ship with the BRZ. Well, Subaru just stepped in to dismount the idea, claiming that its coupe will get a next generation too.

"If I were to be told that, I'd pass out," Subaru’s parent Fuki Heavy Industries Yasuyki Yoshinaga told Automotive News. "It's not going to be just one generation."

He said Toyota and Subaru will continue the work on the second generation of sister cars. Which seems pretty logic, since Toyota owns 20 percent of Fuji Heavy Industry. But on the other hand, borrowing some tech from BMW to create a more powerful GT 86 also seems very attractive.

And let’s not forget that all three cars (BRZ, GT 86 and FR-S) are all manufactured at Subaru’s plant. Another reason why Toyota can’t just step away. It might borrow some sporty bits from BMW, but it can’t part ways with Subby too soon.

Although the two coupes are offered as budget sportscars, people are not flocking in dealerships to get hold of one, with most of them complaining about the low hot-hatch-like power output.

Yes, the 2-liter boxer engine in the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT 86 (Scion FR-S) develops only 200 hp, but that’s the whole point of the car people don’t get. Instead offering you 300 or 400 hp and a crappy handling, Toyota did exactly the opposite.

Subaru brought its FA20 engine, the same one on the Legacy GT DIT minus the turbo, and gave it to Toyota, which focused on how to make the car perfectly balanced and fun to drive. The result is a practical coupe that can offer you fun at low speeds an work as a daily drive too.

It’s like a basic factory pack - Toyota gives you the perfect car to start with and it’s up to you to decide for more power by adding a turbo or supercharger. But maybe the two companies decide to offer the twin-scroll turbo version in the next gen GT 86/BRZ and spare clients the hassle of fitting and aftermarket one and fine tune the system again.
