The Subaru Legacy and Outback models are being affected by a recall campaign for the third time this summer.

Subaru is now recalling 809 Legacy and Outback vehicles in the U.S., as insideline reports.

The campaign affects cars belonging to the 2010 and 2011 model years and was initiated due to the fact that the oil lubrication hole within the six-speed manual transmission transfer case had not been drilled. The problem could lead to the breaking of the gears.

Subaru’s American division has also paused sales for the affected vehicles on July 19.

"Due to a programming error, a lubrication hole within the six-speed manual transmission was omitted," the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source. "If the transmission gears are not properly lubricated, a groaning sound may begin to develop, alerting the driver to a problem. If this sound is ignored and no action is taken, the gears will eventually break and this condition will lead to vehicle power loss, possibly resulting in a crash."

The recall should be debuted on August 6, with the automotive producer’s dealers drilling a hole for oil lubrication and potentially replace the internal parts that have damaged due to the lack of lubrication. Subaru also informed its dealers that the affected vehicles that have clocked over 6,250 miles will need to have their main shaft and 3rd through 6th gearset replaced.

The new recall comes after Subaru called back 74,000 units of the Legacy and Outback over a steering column wiring issue and recalled almost 30,000 units of the two vehicles back in May due to a fault in the CVT cooling hose.
