Subarus officials have decided to launch the facelifted Legacy, in all its variants, on their home market of Japan. Aside from the improvements and modifications that the refreshed Legacy gets on all markets, the JDM version gets an improved version of Subaru’s 2.5-liter non-turbo boxer engine.
However, the big addition to its range is the new 2.0-liter direct injection turbocharged boxer engine with 296hp. Peak power arrives at 5,600 rpm, while its maximum torque figure of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) is available over a wide rev range (2,000 to 4,800 rpm). In addition, the engine also benefits from the Impreza’s stop start system which helps improve economy by 20% and gets a similar percentage for the reduction in emissions. The 2.0GT DIT engine is said to be a turbocharged version of the engine found in teh Toyota GT86, Scion FR-S and Subaru’s very own BRZ. In the Legacy, the engine is coupled to a CVT gearbox - an option which will definitely not be available on the future WRX.
A variant of this turbo engine is very likely to make it into the future WRX, and despite the rumors that it may get electric turbocharging, there’s no confirmation yet.
