Subaru Is Obsessed with Wedding and Dog Commercials

Subaru used to be the car company that made rally fans happy, but now they’re making stuff only big dog owners and… Ellen Degeneres likes, if you know what I mean.
That change in attitude is best reflected by this next commercial. As right after the company launched a powerful new WRX STI, marketing teams are back to promoting CVT equipped little hybrids.

“Wedding” is a commercial about a coupe driving to a wedding in their Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid. “It’s a hybrid. It’s a shortcut. It’s a Subaru.” - this is even featured as a motto on the official website. This has to be the first car commercial ever which lets you know they didn’t put navigation into the car, so you’ll have to stop and ask for directions. With a maximum rating of 33 mpg highway, the Crosstrek doesn’t exactly make a good case for itself either. Not when a hybrid midsize sedan will get you up to 50mpg.

Then there’s the problem of the wedding commercial itself, which like dogs seems to be an obsession for Subaru. We found a number of older commercials from FHI’s car division, all focused around weddings.
