The Subaru BRZ tS, which was already packed with performance tech, has just received the Subaru Tecnica International (STI) treatment over in Japan.
The sad news is that there's still no turbocharged engine, so output remains stable for the 2-liter boxer engine. But pretty much everything else has been played with. Limited to just 300 examples, this package hopes to elevate the performance of the BRZ for those hardcore fans who expect more.
Subaru says this coupe delivers the “agile handling performance evoking a racing car”. The customization starts with a set of four STI-designed 18-inch forged aluminum wheels, which come standard with 225/40 Michelin Pilot Super Sport, the best ones yet fitted to the BRZ.
The suspension features the most changes. At the front, we have STI-tuned inverted strut front suspension setup and coil springs, while the rear boasts new rear dampers and lateral links with pillow ball bushings and a large-diameter drive shaft that can take a pounding.
The in-house tuners have also changed the function of the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system and switched the standard brakes for Brembo-sourced, STI-badged four-pot calipers with larger rotors.
There are cosmetic changes too. At the front, the bumper has been dressed with a large splitter and peppered with red trim and STI badges. The side skirts, rear diffuser and boot lid spoiler are also new. For contrast, the side view mirrors and shark-fin antenna are both painted black.
Hugging you in those tight Fuji bends, the new Recaro-designed bucket seats are trimmed in black leather and Alcantara. STI pieces are immediately visible throughout the cabin, on the gear shifter, steering wheel, starter button and any other element the driver might reach.
Both manual and automatic versions of the Subaru BRZ tS STI are available in Japan, with prices ranging from 3,990,000 to 4,071,000 yen. Color options include Sunrise Yellow, WR Blue Pearl, Crystal White Pearl and Crystal Black Silica.
