The Subaru BRZ coupe has dawned the STI badge on several occasions, both as a concept and as a factory-tuned special. This is the BRZ STI Sport, which is making its web debut ahead of the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show and will likely only be available in Japan.
The project aims to offer "pure handling delight," but it almost feels like it's been born out of frustration. The STI division would have loved to make another generation of the 2-door coupe. Unfortunately, Toyota is now doing its own thing with a bit of BMW help, and a second-gen BRZ looks extremely unlikely.
As we've come to expect, the STI Sport version doesn't come with any power increases, so the 2.0-liter boxer engine makes the usual 205 ponies. Instead, the in-house tuners focused on improving the way the BRZ drives.
The special edition rides on stiffer suspension, and 20-inch STI wheels painted black to contrast with the red brake calipers. Subaru says this has the most rigid chassis of any BRZ road car yet. The only bit of aero is the trunk wing. If you want a more aggressive BRZ, the tS model is still the way to go.
The Cool Gray Khaki paint is exclusive to this model, and we think it fits the car well. However, only 100 models, sold in Japan, will be finished this way. The interior, finished in black and red leather, is also a nice touch. Order books open on October 25. But Subaru won't just give the cars to the first customers, instead organizing a lottery draw from the pool of people who express interest.
It's the same process as for the S208, a special edition of the popular WRX STI that will also be presented in Tokyo Motor Show. Subaru will also display the Viziv Performance Concept, so it has its eye on the hot crossover market.
