B stands for Boxer, R for rear-wheel-drive, and Z comes from Zenith. Based on this acronym, there’s no denying the BRZ is a driver’s car first and to hell with the rest. Thanks to this focus on handling and the joys of carving corners, Subaru’s fixed-head coupe also happens to be popular with the aftermarket community.
Spoiler lips, wheels, rear wings, sticky tires, suspension, brakes, widebody kits, you name it; the BRZ receives a lot of attention from the tuning world. Something we’ve never seen, however, is a louvered window as seen in this rendering.

Coming courtesy character artist Alexander Juarez, the digitally tuned car definitely takes inspiration from the Mustang Mach 1 that introduced window louvers into the mainstream in 1969. Ford made the pony car look fast even while sitting still, and to this day, S550 owners can be seen modding their ‘Stangs in this fashion.

Earlier still, we shouldn’t forget that the Bullitt Mustang made rear quarter window louvers cool. It’s a bit of a shame this detail didn’t carry over to the S550 Bullitt special edition, but on the upside, the engine did receive a few more ponies.

Speaking of suck-squeeze-bang-blow, the BRZ has always been offered with a 2.0-liter engine from the FA20 family. Codenamed 4U-GSE in the case of the Toyota 86, the boxer tops 205 horsepower at 7,000 revs and 156 pound-feet of torque.

Come 2021, Subaru will redesign the BRZ but not to the extent many of us were expecting. The latest report on the second generation suggests a reworked platform from the first generation, an upgrade to the automatic transmission, and the switch to the FA24 engine from the Ascent mid-size crossover without the twin-scroll turbo.

Look forward to an estimated 217 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque with roughly the same curb weight as the outgoing model. That may not seem like much, but don’t forget that Subaru and Toyota equip their boxer-engined sports cars with rather skinny tires that make it easy to kick the tail out whenever you feel like having fun.

The 215-millimeter section doesn’t seem like a lot, but the Mazda MX-5 goes even further with 195-millimeter tires for the entry-level Sport grade in the United States of America.
