Midsize sedans have rapidly gained back the ground they lost in favor of the cheaper compacts and are now once again the second biggest segment in America after pickups. With its famous all-wheel drive systems and reputation for bulletproof reliability, Subaru could be ideally places to take advantage of this if their car, which is the newest one to hit the market, is good.
The brand new 2015 Legacy promises to be their best car ever and with a starting price of just $22,490, it’s also competitive against the Accords and the Camrys. Subaru USA has announced official pricing for the new midsize yesterday, saying that deliveries will take place this Summer. Here’s what to look for:

The base model comes with a four-speaker audio system, Bluetooth/USB/iPod/AUX connectivity and a 6.2-inch screen. Something else you’re getting is a newer chassis that Subaru has worked hard on and a 2.5-liter engine that’s become a bit of a fuel sipper. Producing the same 175-hp as most of its competitors, this boxer-4 is supposed to return 36 mpg highway and 26 mpg city. 36 on an all-wheel drive midsize – who’s ever going to buy an Impreza?

Speaking of the Impreza, we have to talk about the looks. Some will say the new Legacy is a bit boring, but the grown-up look suits it well in our opinion and it’s definitely not as ugly as previous generations were. Alas, the Ford Fusion still is a much more beautiful sedan, but Subaru has its own large trapezoidal grille now.

Most buyers will skip the basic model and go for the $24,290 Legacy 2.5i Premium. This is $200 more expensive than last year, but you do get 10-way power driver’s seat and dual-zone automatic climate control.

The real eye candy, however, is the $27,290 Legacy 2.5i Limited. This comes with perforated leather seats, wood trim (yes, it’s fake), 12-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system and a 18-inch alloy wheels.

Those seeking old-school V6 thrills can go for the 256-hp Legacy 3.6R Limited, the flagship model. Doing so will mean only 29 mpg highway and 20 mpg city. It’s just over $30,000 before you even add the options, but dual exhaust tips and automatically adjusting headlights soften the blow to a degree.

All the prices we’ve mentioned include destination. For the official word from Subaru, check out the press release below.
