He’s done it before, but it was seven years ago, and the result was a 50 feet (15 m) jump, which is about 116 feet (35 m) less than this one. The new record Gregg Godfrey set last Friday at the Evel Knievel Days in Butte, Mont. and by the looks of it the stunt driver put a lot of effort to pull it off.
You see a lot of records being broken these days, especially when it’s a car related thing, but flying around in a semi-truck is something else. After all, we are talking about a nine-ton truck reaching 70 mph for the stunt to be successfully conducted. Maybe that’s why 2,000 people turned out to watch the stunts.
According to The Montana Standard, Gregg was supposed to jump over a semi-truck with the semi-truck, but Evel Knievel Days’ organizer Austin James said they couldn’t fit Evel Knievel’s extra-long “Red Hauler” into the space between the two dirt ramps. That didn’t stop the 2007 Baja 1000 winner to pull off what he came for, and surprisingly things turned out even better than initially planned.
“Got the record at 160ft. I meant only to go 140,” the daredevil announced on Instagram minutes after setting a new world record. The previous achievement was set last year, by EMC and the Lotus F1 team, when they jumped a semi 83 feet over a moving Formula One car.
Now, to be honest, we’re quite impressed of the stunt. I mean, when you see that massive vehicle approaching the side of the ramp you almost feel the shivers, hoping it will not break and safely reach the other side. We can’t but tip our hat to such deeds.
