A while back we were telling you that autonomous cars will change the way we perceive transportation from the core. The alterations they will bring about will expand to every aspect of car ownership and will not be limited to just reshaping the way autos look like. Not by a long shot.
A new study done by OECD’s International Transport Forum said that autonomous cars will also end street parking as we know it. The reasons behind these claims are rather simple. Just think about why you park your car on the street. To be as close to where you want to get as possible, right?
Well, since future cars will have the ability to drive and park themselves, it will be like you’d have your own chauffeur. That means you’d be dropped off wherever you need to be and have your car park itself in a proper parking lot all by itself. Then, when you need to go, you’ll just call it up via an app or something.
That would, in turn, lead to a more fluid traffic, rendering congestion nearly non-existent. On top of that, we might turn parking tickets in a thing of the past.
Another reason we might no longer see cars on the side of the road is the fact that ownership of one might not be necessary. For example, we could rent one by the hour, one that would simply pick us up, take us to our destination and then move on to another customer. Think of it as a taxi without a driver. That way, not only would we, as a species, be more efficient but also a lot less stressed about owning, insuring and servicing our cars.
Sure, it all sounds like a petrolhead’s worst nightmare but the truth of the matter is, that’s the way things will look like. Furthermore, if self-driving cars prove that they can be a lot safer than human-driven ones, we might be banned from driving our cars in the not so distant future.
