When his wife Robyn, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer, challenged him to build a street-legal boat car while he was home taking care of her, Mark Ray decided to go for it. It may have taken him quite some time and about $10,000 to build, but he won much more than just a head-turning piece of machinery.
We’re sorry to disappoint you, but even though the vehicle is street worthy, it won’t float. The focal point of this project was to prove that a mad idea can become real if enough love and work are put into it. If there’s a proper reason Mark Ray designed and built the conception for that is to see his wife smile. It’s bringing the positive energy into the family; that's what the man was looking after.
One thing led to the other and after about one year a nautical fanatic turned into a Frankenstein mechanic. What you see here is not a toy; Ray spent a total of $10,000 on merging a GMC Jimmy with a sunken and recovered Sea Ray Bow Rider. He stripped both the vessel and the car down and only kept the parts he needed. From the truck, he only held its chassis, seats and motor, which he then built into the naked boat.
The result? A street-legal boat car that makes plenty of waves while cruising the streets. Waves of joy and happiness, of course, but they count too. In fact, it appears the man had even won a couple of prizes at national competitions, so it’s fair to assume the vehicle may as well one day become a collectible.
