For the 2014 model year, Chevrolet added its new stop-start technology to the Malibu sedan, and it is proving to be a very popular feature for customers. Since the introduction of this fuel-saving technology, Chevy says that 97 percent of its customers are choosing these models.
This figure accounts for around 83,000 Malibu sedans that allows Chevy to claim the “most aggressive rollout of stop-start technology in the U.S. by an American automaker.” This doesn’t even include the technology offered on the 2015 Impala. In the case of both the Malibu and Impala, stop-start is standard on cars equipped with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.
On the 2014-15 Malibu, the addition of stop-start and other powertrain changes helped improve the sedan’s fuel economy to 25 mpg city, 36 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined, which allowed Chevy to drop the more costly and complex Malibu eAssist mild hybrid. The 2015 Impala with stop-start adds 1 mpg city compared to the 2014 model year.
Chevrolet points out that the average driver in the U.S. lets their car idle for 16 minutes per day, which leads to an estimated 3.8 million gallons of fuel being burned off during this time. This idling also leads to 40,000 tons of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere. Chevrolet didn’t say how much of that 16 minutes of idling its stop-start technology could cut down, but it would surely help reduce fuel waste and the emission of harmful gases.
With that kind of waste, drivers could save between $1,140 and $3,420 over the lifetime of their vehicle, not to mention cut back on harmful exhaust emissions.
