Stig Helmet Sold for GBP4,300

The autographed Stig helmet placed on sale by former Top Gear employee Sophia Vaizey was sold on Wednesday night at Gorringes Auctioneers for GBP4,300 ($6,790, EUR4,880), much more than the 1,200 GBP ($1,842, or EUR1,448) estimated by the organizers of the auction.

The helmet, signed by Richard Hammond and the Stig himself, as well as by the Top Gear production crew, was purchased by an undisclosed buyer. The high price for which the helmet was sold can be pretty much attributed to the recent Stig-BBC scandal which captivated the automotive media in the past two months.

"The Stig wore that one on the show for quite a while. He then got a new one for safety reasons, so it got stored away in the Top Gear office,”
said Vaizey, a former Top Gear production coordinator. “I was quite surprised when they gave it to me but also I felt honored."

This particular helmet has been worn by the Stig between 2002 and 2005. The heads of Richard Hammond and other crew members also fitted, at one point, into it. It was given to Vaizey as a leaving present when she departed the show.

As for the man who made the helmet famous, Ben Collins is said to be getting ready for revenge aboard the team which films Top Gear's rival show, Fifth Gear. Collins promises he will bring to the screens all his great ideas which have been turned down over the years by BBC. With Fifth Gear, Collins will have a similar role to the one played at Top Gear but will also be one of the show’s hosts.
