Stewart Won't Accept Cut of RBS Sponsorship

Sir Jackie Stewart doesn't want to hear anything about a renegotiation of his deal with the Royal Bank of Scotland, despite the financial difficulties encountered by the famous bank through the economic recession.

Asked (presumably) by the RBS officials to accept a cut of his multi-million euro deal as the company's representative in Formula 1 for his remaining 2 years of contract, the 3-time F1 champion said no. Not only that, but he also pointed out that hundreds of people losing their jobs due to the economic downturn doesn't make him any more interested in helping the RBS.

“I am sorry these people are losing their jobs but I signed a contract and have done my bit. I have two years more to run,” commented Stewart on the matter, as reported by GMM news agency.

However, talking to British newspaper The Herald Tribune earlier this week, the Scottish champion insisted he is willing to help the RBS any way he can, but he should not be held responsible “when it comes to directors taking decisions or politicians meeting bankers.”

“I'm happy to help the RBS at the moment and I am in the process of drawing up a proposal, which will be of significant interest to them,” added Stewart.

Unlike Stewart, another Scottish sportsman that is currently sponsored by the RBS, tennis player Andy Murray, confirmed he is willing to renegotiate his deal given the company's financial difficulties.

“RBS have supported me since I was 13 years old and I have a great relationship with them. Now I want to try and help them. I don't want to discuss whether I am planning to give money back or not. I will speak to the people at RBS about the best way forward and we will work something out. The bottom line is I want to help,” said Murray.
