Stewart Tells Brawn Not to Sign Hamilton

After advising both Lewis Hamilton and his father Anthony not to leave McLaren-Mercedes in the wake of the lying saga this month, 3-time Formula 1 champion Sir Jackie Stewart insisted Ross Brawn should not consider making the British ace an offer to join Brawn GP. The “friendly advice” came after several British media channels talked about rumors regarding a potential switch from Hamilton to the Brackley-based team.

According to the aforementioned sources, Brawn would be interested in signing the reigning F1 champion detrimental to Brazilian veteran Rubens Barrichello. That would set a virtual all-British dream-team at Brackley, the only outfit who has managed to win races this season.

Although the BGP 001 is clearly the car to beat in the start of this season, Stewart believes it would be a mistake for Hamilton to move to Brawn GP. Not so much for the British driver but for Brawn himself, as Barrichello's extensive know-how in setting up an F1 car could not be replaced by Hamilton's talent.

“Rubens is very experienced in the setting up of the car, Lewis is not. And Ross (Brawn) needs that knowledge right now because of the ban on in-season testing,” said Stewart, who guided Barrichello's steps in Formula 1 from 1997 thru 1999, while team-owning Stewart Grand Prix.

Anthony Hamilton revealed to the British media that he's looking into finding his son another team in the near future because of the several scandals he was drawn into during his stay at McLaren (beginning with the spy-gate two years ago and continuing with the multitude of sporting penalties received by Hamilton as a consequence of McLaren's poor judgement calls).

Ferrari was also named one of Hamilton's potential destinations, but an opinion poll within the Italian fans revealed that the Fernando Alonso – Robert Kubica duo is the most wanted team-up for the near future. Also, Alonso is rumored to have already signed a pre-agreement with the Scuderia, which will make Hamilton's arrival to Maranello even less probable.
