Steve Berman to Lead Litigation Against Toyota

Following the first hearing in Toyota's unintended acceleration cases, held on May 13, James Selna, the judge appointed by the United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation to oversee the lawsuits, appointed Steve Berman, managing partner of Hagens Berman, to co-lead the litigation against the carmaker.

Berman will take charge of what is one of the largest consolidations of class-action cases in the history of the US, with over 300 state and federal suits filed.

"It's a privilege that Judge Selna chose us to handle this massive litigation against Toyota,"
Berman said, who won after battling for the role with some 70 other law firms.

"It's a great responsibility to lead a class of this magnitude and it's something we believe Hagens Berman has the experience and talent to achieve on behalf of the consumers we represent."

Berman will work with two other attorneys appointed as interim co-counsel - Newport Beach attorney Mark Robinson and Elizabeth Cabraser of San Francisco. Berman originally filed a number of state claims against the Japanese carmaker, asking it to allow consumers to return their defective products.

"Judge Selna brought together a team of attorneys who bring an enormous amount of legal talent and hardscrabble courtroom experience," Berman said. "I look forward to leading such a stellar team of advocates for the plaintiffs along with my co-counsel."

"We expect Toyota to mount a vigorous defense, and one should never underestimate a company that can dedicate such massive resources as Toyota. The legal team Judge Selna selected is second to none, and ready for this battle."
