TrapTap, a start-up company, proposes a new, wireless speed trap warning device, which they claim is legal in every country.
They raised over 330,000 CAD, the rough equivalent of over $250,000, and the funding part of Kickstarter only has one week to go. The company announced that shipping will begin in July 2016, so early backers should expect their units by August.
Now, let’s see what all the fuss is about. The TrapTap is a wireless device that connects to your smartphone and a dedicated app, and you can use it hands-free while driving to discover if you are driving in a school zone or an area with a speed trap.
Thanks to the fact that it is operated without your hands, you are allowed to use it in any country, as it is not an actual radar detector. While mobile apps are forbidden in some countries, this device does not qualify as an app, because it is an object which can stick to anything in your car.
Batteries are included, and it can also be used on multiple vehicles. Since it’s connected to an app, it “knows” where speed traps are placed. It also has knowledge of red light cameras. Its creators claim to have mapped every school zone and red light camera in 60 countries (full list available in the photo gallery). The first backers paid $69 for a device, but interested people can get one for $107.
Here comes the cool part: just like with an app, the device notifies you of a speed trap, speed camera, red light camera, or school zone. You can “snooze” the alert, or you can cancel it using a “double tap.” The same gesture can be used to send a warning for a speed camera.
Using the app and user-collected data, TrapTap promises to provide its users with a live environment to help them avoid fines and other hazards they might encounter in one of the situations described above. We do find a flaw - since it uses an app on your mobile phone, you still need a data plan to use it, and this might be costly while abroad.
