With the previous generation Mazda3, we eventually got a whole bunch of lesser-known but still really cool body kits. However, the customization always starts with the lowering of the suspension. We wondered if such a thing has happened to the 2020 model, and we found one in Japan.
It belongs to an Instagram user who goes by roadster_runner, and yes, he also owns an MX-5 and a Mazda6. Yes, they've all been lowered.
Of the three cars we mentioned, the Mazda3 hatchback somehow feels the freshest. The Zoom Zoom automaker has raised the bar to the point where you can mistake their interiors for those of a luxury car. And the outside is great as well.
Some have called the hatch bloated or bulbous. We've always thought it resembles the old Alfa Romeo Brera, one of the sexiest Italian modern classics. However, lower the stance and those soft lines suddenly become very weird.
That's right, this is one of the few occasions where we don't find Japanese VIP tuning to be entertaining. Maybe this is the wrong wheel design or color. But they just look small, especially compared to the bulging rear wings of the 4th-gen Mazda3. The sedan might have been better in this situation.
The Corolla now comes in fun hatchback form with a swanky body kit on the XSE trim level. Give that some lowered suspension and it would look the business. It's funny how Mazda and Toyota have almost reversed what they want to offer, and not just in the compact segment.
Still, the Mazda3 has things to set it apart from its competitors, such as available AWD that works with G-Vectoring or the hot new 2-liter Skyactiv-X engine. But we still kind of miss the days of the Mazdaspeed3/MPS hyper hatch. And it was hyper for its time, with an above-average engine and savage handling.
