SSC Killing Off Ultimate Aero - Will Make Special XT Version

The SSC Ultimate Aero was, at some point, the fastest car in the world, having reached a speed of 409.9 km/h (256.18 mph). Now, afterward not much was heard about it, primarily because SSC North America showed the world the Tuatara, a stunning looking thing which promised to build on the Ultimate Aero’s high-speed credentials, while also adding a dash of style.

Despite the fact that the Tuatara has been grabbing all the headlines, the company has kept the Ultimate Aero in production - until now. However, they won’t simply stop making it without some kind of special edition (what manufacturer does these days?), so they have announced an even more extreme version of the car, the XT, as the one which will cap its production.

Its twin-turbo V8 engine has been breathed upon so it now produces 1,300 hp and it sends its power to the back via a seven-speed gearbox with paddle shifters. This means that the 2.8-second 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 2.8 seconds of the regular car drops to 2.65 seconds and the top speed is increased to - wait for it - 439 km/h (273 mph) - figures which are very close to those of the Tuatara, but in the Ultimate Aero, you get them without the alien looks.

Only five will be built and you can be sure they will be snapped up by rich speed freaks from Texas who have all the straight and level road they need to max it. How rich? Well, the manufacturer has yet to announce the price, but it will be pretty steep.
